Full course description

The more data that regulators and researchers collect, the more they find themselves asking about the best way to communicate their data story. In this course, students with intermediate, limited or no experience in programming or statistics can still learn how to report descriptive information, develop effective visualizations and apply statistical tests using one of the world’s most popular programming languages: Python! These skills will enhance your ability to convey important lessons derived from your research and evidence. You will identify a research hypothesis and—using Python—conduct basic statistical analyses for a variety of situations. In addition, you will develop effective visualizations and communicate a compelling and rigorous data narrative.

Course Objectives

  • Participants will learn the fundamentals of the Python programming language and popular packages (Pandas, NumPy, SciPy and Seaborn).
  • Using Python, participants will learn how to evaluate their data and apply appropriate statistical tests, in addition to generating descriptive statistics and visualizations to better understand their data.

Competency Alignment

Strategic Thinking, Oral Communications, Research and Measurement, Envisioning, Flexibility/Agility, Influence and Negotiation, Partnering, Accountability
