Full course description
The use of evidence to inform nursing practice is as important for regulators as it is for clinicians. Evidence should guide regulation and board policies and decisions, but reviewing and critiquing research literature on your own can be intimidating. Taking this course provides an opportunity to hone your reading and critical appraisal skills. You will join fellow regulators in real-time videoconferences, alternating with asynchronous discussion forums, where you will engage in collaborative reflection on the quality and applicability of a variety of research articles germane to nursing regulation. The knowledge, skills and attitudes you will gain from this ‘virtual journal club’ will strengthen your regulatory practice and leadership competencies.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Summarize the history and benefits of an evidence-based journal club.
- Evaluate best practices for running a successful journal club.
- Examine ways to overcome barriers to implementing, leading and participating in a journal club.
- Review fundamental concepts related to research design and methodology.
- Critically appraise the strengths, weaknesses, feasibility, and regulatory impact of various peer-reviewed articles.
